I Need To Do It For The Love
Control (2007)
Biopic, Q&A w/ director Anton Corbijn, Gartenbaukino 20250213
Poster and flyers throughout the city announce a special exhibition: Anton Corbijn, photographer like Olaf Heine, Sami Siilin or Ross Halfin presents his work at Kunstforum under the title „Favorite Darkness“. At the same time, Gartenbaukino screens his movies, where he appears for a podium discussion for the kickoff with „Control“.
Curator Lisa Ortner-Kreil next to cinema director Norman Shetler remembers her first encounter holding the sleeve of „Joshua Tree“ by U2, that earns applause and Anton shows a thumb up. He tells of his beginnings moving to London because of a false job promise. But he loves the music of Joy Division and wants to be near.
He does not picture stars but people and likes to go to them instead of meeting at a studio. At the start, he only liked maybe two photos he did per year, but got more confident. With the attention, he had to explain his work. After the success of „Control“ he thought that must always be the case.
„The American“, „A Most Wanted Man“ with Philipp Seymour Hoffman and music by Herbert Grönemeyer and „Life“ about a photograph like „Rod, Lennon & Me“ or indirectly „Terminal“ followed. Being asked about his music videos like „One“, „Heart-Shaped Box“, „Liar“ or „My Friends“, Anton tells he has used all his ideas and he needs to do it for the love.
Based on the book and co-produced by Deborah Curtis, „Control“ tells the story of Ian Curtis of Joy Division on 35mm. For the aesthetic, they changed the color to black and white, adding a kind of darkness. Also there is some humor in this tragedy, with a lot of sweat, cigarettes and the Buzzcocks, shining a light on songs like „Love Will Tear Us Apart“.
The soundtrack also features New Order, Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Roxy Music and more. Sam Riley („The Dark Valley“)does a wonderful job portraying the iconic singer. So the movie is like the music of Joy Division, raw and beautiful and lives on with bands like Transmission. To join this screening, Anton took off two days from shooting his next movie about Patricia Highsmith..
