A Weighted Remorse Euro Tour 2024 presented by Rola Music, B72, Austria 20241023

Starting on October 15th, Rett Smith embarked on the mission to present his latest album, “A Weighted Remorse” (you can read our review, here). Our friends of Rola Music invited us to witness Rett’s lecture on Rock Soul Americana at B72 the past October 23rd.

Starting the night, we were gladly surprised by the Brazilians Blue Mar, coming from presenting their second album “Oliveira” at Rough Trade Berlin with a brand new lineup, but don’t let yourself be misled by that, the band played like they have been doing it together for ages. With a voice that remembered me Miles Kane or Tom Meighan from Kasabian, even Kelly Jones from Stereophonics; a classic rock raspy voice that was perfectly accompanied by a set of percussions that bring all the Brazilian flavor.

With solid bass and drum lines, I couldn’t make my mind between dancing and headbanging. I cannot imagine a better way to start the night and get ourselves ready for what was about to commence.

Minutes later, enough to get another whisky, Rett rushes to the stage with the attitude of a consecrated Rockstar, portraying the stance that one could imagine by his tunes. -My name is Rett Smith and I play Rock and Roll-, the first notes of “East Broadway Dash” guitar explode, followed with the same rush and energy as the Frontman “7 Train“, “Sunsets“´, and “Pay the Piper“. Pure Rock Americana that hints us the powerful simplicity of White Stripes, one thunderous guitar, and the hard drums of Drew Silverman backing him up.

Cold Air“, from his second album “What the Walls Cannot See“, brought some Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds vibe. A grim ambient pumping blood and excitement at each beat until reaching “Sheffield Street” from his third album “A Nightly Consequence“.

After a short intervention, Rett explained to the audience, -When you come from Texas or Tennessee, you cannot play a set without some country songs-, Drew stepped down the stage and Rett started his solo country subset with the single “Better Day” followed by “I’ll still stay“, and -One last solo before I cry and you leave- “The Hook“, both songs that features Jessica Lea Mayfield on the recordings.

Bringing back the drums and to pump the energy back, Rett Smith and Drew go back to “A Nightly Consequence” and play “Crawling“, “Something Sacred“, and “Gwendolyn“, with “Stop Signs” from the new album in between, enough to bring the Soul back to us and get the audience headbanging.

And just to close the night, like a nostalgic and thankful gesture, “Luck Burns Deep” from his first album “Giving Up On Quitting“. Going back to where all began for Rett. His Americana Rock Blues coming from the Soul.
