How could this be done by such a smiling sweetheart?

The Kooks, Girl in the Year Above

European Tour 2026 presented by FM4 Indiekiste Planet TT Raiffansenhalle im Gasometer Wien, Austria 20260223

In charge of opening this nostalgic night (and the whole European tour) was the Cornish/Irish band Girl in the Year Above. Cranking the vibe with the vibrant and contagious energy of Jennifer Ball. Her presence reminded me sometimes of Florence, whimsical and fairy-like dancing across the stage, a powerful voice, and cute melodies built the base of their performance.
Overall, right on point to remember the indie sleaze era, not only aesthetically but musically.

Then came the celebrants of the night. 20 years of career is easier said than done.
Honoring singles and hits from all their discography, The Kooks prepared a well-mixed setlist intercalating oldies and new ones to keep the mood up. Starting with Sofa Song, from their first album Inside In/Inside Out (2006), to continue with the Konk (2008) classic Always Where I Need to Be, or one of my personal favorites, Westside from Listen (2014), dedicated to everyone who hasn’t found their one love, and may do so here. The bangers rollercoaster kept going all night, anything to make us happy, make us feel alive. And yes, of course, Junk of the Heart from the homonymous 2011 album was played too.

A special moment that moved me to the bone was when Luke Pritchard took some seconds to share the story of how, during a time of reflection, he realized that all the songs he writes were somehow his way to connect with his dad, whom he lost when 3 years old. And to whom he wrote See Me Now, from Listen (2014), another favorite of mine.

Lastly, after a short encore, the band came back to close the night with two of their most famous hits. Stars of the night and the epitome of the celebration, Ooh La and Naïve.

And just like that, with a thunderous applause, a happy crowd recognized 20 years of a great career and discography.
