Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 (2015)

Concert Movie Screening at Filmfestival am Rathausplatz Wien, Austria 20250723

Luckily the time of live streams basically has gone. But there are bands, that don’t appear on stages anymore. That is when (open air) cinemas can help out. In Vienna, there are several options: ‚Kino wie noch nie‘ at Augarten, ‚Kino am Dach‘ at the library, SciFi im Park by VOLXkino or Arena Sommerkino

Maybe the biggest is the Filmfestival Rathausplatz, with a lot of food and side program like the Aperol Spritz Piazza with live acts like Ivery last year or Paenda this one. The movie program lists concerts of all genres including Billie Eilish, Bruce Springsteen, Oasis, Best Of Glastonbury, Pitbull, Queen and many more.

Just after Heavy Metal legend Ozzy Osbourne passed away (and hopes are high for a cinematic version of the final show), Aerosmith revive on the big screen. A final visit at Wiener Stadthalle unfortunately never happened, like other ones e.g. in Miami. But their energy is superbly captured in „Aerosmith rocks Donington“.

Shot at the famous Download Festival in the middle of the UK, singer Steven Tyler enters with the headdress of Native Americans alongside Joe Perry (Hollywood Vampires), Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford. The film gets close to its protagonists, and presents nice overviews too, especially from the back of the stage, sometimes with psychedelic effects.

The set starts with „Train Kept A Rollin“ and „Eat The Rich“. Most seats at Rathausplatz are taken, and several sing with „Cryin’“ standing behind. In the middle of the 104 minutes documentary stands „Janie’s Got A Gun“. The love hymn „I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing“ from „Armageddon“ still gets covered like by Schiefer for a special occasion.

With The Beatles’ „Come Together“, „Dude (Looks Like A Lady)“ and „Walk This Way“ (re-recorded with Run DMC like Anthrax collaborated with Public Enemy), the end gets closer. A true highlight is „Dream On“ (covered by Eminem), and the final applaud honors „Sweet Emotion“ and „Mama Kin“ and a Rock band with huge impact lasting since 1970 and ongoing.
