History from North to South – All-embracing

Melvins, Redd Kross

Roadtrip To Outta Space, Arena Wien – Große Halle, Austria 20171024

It is another one of those evenings, which starts with the one problem: You have to decide, which concert you want to attend.

Easiest to let someone else decide, and like this, you take the ride from the one end of the city to the other to the Arena. The reason is a very special package, two bands from the west side of the US, one from the north, one from the south, and sharing members.

Redd Kross is the first group that enters the stage. That these guys had their roots already in the late 70s and opened for Black Flag as a start feels just a bit unreal. Their energy is the one of a teenie rock band. Also their sound reminds at some point of one, but they do a balancing act from this back to the classic Rock’n’Roll style of the Beatles and again to the Hardcore Punk they come from. Steven McDonald (also OFF!) even looks like a rocket, with his silver shirt and jumping that high. This is a music, which should not be missing at any party.

Steven and also drummer Dale Crover both have another commitment with the second band of the night: The Melvins. In this three-piece constellation with legendary Buzz Osborne on the microphone and guitar, they do a musically balancing act too between… after all between everything you can think of in Rock music. This does not make it easier to describe it, but it feels somehow let’s say all-embracing. No doubt that everyone in love with this kind of sound should try to see them ones. The people who made it this evening bang their heads in the rhythm of Buzz’ awesome hair and celebrate this part of Rock history, and the only pity is, that it does not last longer.
