Of Snakes and Crocodiles and Meteors
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Los Bitchos
EU/UK ’23 presented by PSI2 Music at Planet TT Bank Austria Halle Gasometer Wien, Austria 20230313
Sometimes you have to be patient but it is worth it on the long run. This is a show, that should have taken months ago as Arena Open Air with Grace Cummings as support. Now it is a end of winter indoor action at the Gasometer presented by PSI2 and a blast even without the light summer feelings.
After waiting in the queue of the sold out venue, there is even another delay due to a broken tour bus. But just a little one, as the musicians won’t back down, and so, only fifteen minutes late, the new support Los Bitchos takes over the stage. Not only their typography on the backwall reminds of Maestro Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Their over long distances instrumental music could work as soundtrack too. Playing the rhythms full of dedication, they are one of the up and coming bands of the hour. Just like tonight’s headliner, of which they perform their newly released cover „Trapdoor“.
Hailing from Australia, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have an incredible discography in their young history, that takes the bag for the vinyls. And due to their unique style mix of Psychedelic over Stoner to Classic Rock to (Heavy) Metal like „Planet B“ and even including Hip Hop elements, they attract a very diverse audience. They serve the remarkable „Rattlesnake“ right at the start and with „Gaia“, another highlight follows a little bit later. The six of them seem to consist of the three sections rhythm, assisting instruments like synthesizer, mouth harp or saxophone and frontmen.
At the back, visuals accompany their sound, while an inflatable crocodile jumps over the heads of the audience. And in the corners of the seated gallery, there is no holding back for the dancers either. A bombastic live statement, that explains the meteoric rise of the band. And PSI2 have already the next sold out show up their sleeve with Eels..
