Memories Reflected

Sum 41, Neck Deep

Tour Of The Setting Sum – Final Europe Tour presented by Mind Over Matter / Barracuda Music & Rock Antenne, Wiener Stadthalle D, Austria 20241113

Some bands never stop recording and touring. Others take a break like Kvelertak and come back like DevilDriver, Ministry, Saliva, The Hellacopters or Oasis. And some want to bring their career to a dignified end. This Wednesday, it is the final show in the country at Wiener Stadthalle for one legendary Skate Punk institution.

For the European leg of the tour, Neck Deep from the UK are on board. With their backdrop with 3d effect and Pop Punk, they are the perfect support. After an intro, they spin around the whole stage. Even though they claim, that people don’t have to listen to them as ‚a fool with a microphone‘, they take their stand against world’s grievances and Trump. They welcome everyone, including ‚all aliens‘ coming to „Take Me With You“.

At the end, they tell that „All Killer No Filler“ was one of the most important records in the childhood. Maybe they got it from a neighbor as well. After all, it started Sum 41 and seven more albums followed. Originating in Ajax, Canada, their history is connected with Avril Lavigne and the „American Pie“ movies and more can be found out by reading „Walking Disaster“ by singer Deryck Whibley.

Memories include the festivals and speeding through town in a car with a school friend listening to „Chuck“. For sure they had their influence on likes of HFAR or LNS. Now Sum 41 bring it to an end, starting with „Motivation“ and „The Hell Song“. In thirty songs, they travel through their discography, including „No Reason“, „Noots“ or „Dopamine“ from their latest „Heaven x Hell“.

They spice up their set with snippets of Slayer (who said goodbye in the very place too) and Metallica. Before the song „Walking Disaster“, Whibley tells how his guitar found its way back to him. Also they play a medley from „Does This Look Infected?“, „Rise Up“, „Pieces“, „Fat Lip“ and „Still Waiting“.

Fire, CO2 jets, confetti, Sum 41 include everything there is in pyrotechnics as well as quiet moments. Everyone including the waitresses are in for „In Too Deep“. And as many think, it is over, they return once more for „So Long Goodbye“ and „Welcome to Hell“. A sad but fun goodbye, that has to be reflected listening to more Punk like Pennywise at Brauhund
