As the river Danube connects countries – from Germany down to Romania – the Danube Music Days presented by Music Press Productions connects Bratislava and Vienna. The two capitals can be switched by boat or train. And so the events Hip Hop highlight takes place in the south-east of Vienna, at ((szene)) in the district Simmering.
On entry, Metal by likes of Machine Head fills the yard. About half an hour before the show, Boston’s finest enter the building. Inside, Sticky Fukin Weirdoz and B-Real are blasting from the speakers. Then DJ Crypt (Snowgoons, „Get off the Ground“) takes over with a short warm-up set featuring Wu-Tang Clan amongst others.
Together with Slaine, Danny Boy and Ill Bill, La Coka Nostra is the name of the group, celebrating its 20th anniversary. Throughout the years, the collective published three LPs beginning with „A Brand You Can Trust“ as well as solo records and some singles recently. Touring brought them to Flex before, and just like back then, they hit the place with songs like „Bang Bang“.
Not only do they introduce their country („I’m an American“), they also know exactly where they are, talking with the audience about Falco and Schnitzel. Ill Bill gets the „Overkill“ and they go time-traveling to the 90s („Who’s The Man“). Then Slaine („A World with No Skies“) has a personal matter to talk about: He has been sober for twelve years now!
So if ‚you want to drink – you can!’ He doesn’t condemn, but also ‚if you need help, you should get it‘. After „Trick the Trap“ from „One Day“, he perfectly gets the hang of it back to party with „99 Bottles“. Plus as part of the La Coka Nostra history, the House of Pain classic „Jump Around“ as final must not be missing.
With only about one hour, the show is pretty short. But for this time, it is a wonderful escape from the daily grind, and La Coka Nostra present themselves very approachable. While ((szene)) has got (hed) P.E., Tito & Tarantula, Titan Killer, Mortal Strike and more on its schedule, the Planet Music shows continue righ ton Thursday with Black Stone Cherry.
