As part of the plenty of activities and opportunities to do some networking, that Waves Vienna facilitated, I came into contact with Rola Music agency and got this fantastic new release to listen to.

To begin with, on September 13th, 2024, Rett Smith released his fifth album “A Weighted Remorse“. And let me say it twice, it is a fantastic album, it shows his now characteristic storytelling print on his lyrics surrounded by blues guitar riffs, sporadic whirry guitar solos, and solid bass lines that build the base for a great visceral blues-rock song.

The album opens with a whizzing guitar screaming – Hey! get ready, ’cause we’re embarking on a cross-country Americana blues road trip- in “7 Train“. “East Broadway Dash” is taking your order at that same train bar-wagon – D’you want some soul on your rock? Here you have, how many spoons of groove?-.

Next, “Sunsets” states a darker mood such that Rett’s foggy voice could even resemble Ozzy’s. “Pay The Piper” starts with some dropped bass notes to get you into the head-banging mood. Followed up with one of my highlights of the album, “Cabin Song” feat. Jessica Lea Mayfield who brings her country rock expertise into the song and matches perfectly, at parts it even sounds shoegazy.

Then, tunes like “Beachwood” and “Blue Skies” that are rock & roll at its finest, guitars deliciously unvarnished with all their fluttering spikes and seasoning. “4am Go-Round” displays Smith’s virtuosity via an exquisite solo guitar. And to perfectly close this powerful album, “Stop Signs“.

Overall, an album with shades of rock soul, blues, and even psychedelic groove with hints of fuzz. It got my head banging to each tune and brought me a rush of energy, a punch of empowerment maybe.
