Flying High Indie Time
Amelie Tobien
‚Bye Bye 2023’, Haus der Musik Wien, Austria 20231205
On Monday, Mando Diao are visiting Vienna, on Tuesday, Grandmaster Flash is back. And the very same day, an intimate Folk-Chanson concert beckons to the Haus der Musik situated in the first district.
Known for the Sinnesrauschen Festival with acts like Cousines like Shit and Please Madame or regulars like Hayley Reardon, the museum is equipped with an elevator, that takes the guests directly to the top floor. Here, Amelie Tobien welcomes with one of her last gigs this year.
Like for Christoh, Pressyes or Yakata, her home is Assim Records and recently she shared stage with Ruhmer and At Pavillon at Indieverse 4.0 in STWST Linz. For her recordings, she worked with Mario Fartacek, Alexander Lausch and Martin Scheer for example. And on stage, she is joined by a renowned personnel as well.
On bass, fabolous Emily Smejkal of Prater WG, Rosa Sanchez Quartett and esmeraldas taxi gets the rhythm going. Michael Dey aka Homonym who works with likes of James Choice and Onk Lou gets the electric guitar swinging. Michael Schatzmann (Ankathie Koi, AF90, Lemo, Ness amongst others) holds everything together on drums.
And finally, Amelie Tobien plays a wonderful acoustic guitar accompanied by her characteristic voice (and sometimes the ones of the whole group). They start with „Friday“ ‚because it’s Tuesday‘. ‚I don’t wanna see anybody’s face‘ these lyrics sometimes talk from one’s heart.
„Little Garden“ the frontwoman dedicates to her band. In her brand-new single „nostalgia“, you can find the Foo Fighters titles „Skin and Bones“ or „Everlong“ – ‚I hope you like it‘, she smiles. In „Green Room“, the origin can be found within the lyrics: ‚Keep the mountains close‘ immediatley picture Hallein with the Barmsteine, as it was written there at the Ten Volt Festival.
As Taylor Swift has several eras, Amelie thinks she has three and „We Aimed for the Stars“ was the first. Then she performs her feature with Stuart Neville, a new one and „Monument“ before the encores including „Rivers“. And even if a seated concert is comfortable, some are right and go to the back to have space to dance. Last chance to see them this year: the Winterfest Salzburg.
