A Lesson In True Fantastic Doom
The Obsessed, Psychlona
The Church Within European Tour presented by Sound Of Liberation, Roadtrip To Outta Space at Arena Wien – Dreiraum, Austria 20251008
Some people say, the 90s were a bad decade for Metal music after the style-defining 80s with Extreme Metal bands like Slayer, Death, Morbid Angel, Venom, Bathory or Celtic Frost. But the years until the millennium had a huge impact as well on subgenres like Groove, Nu and especially Doom Metal.
Roadtrip To Outta Space brings back one iconic band after years of absence. It is the third show in this eventful October already after Conan and Masters Of Reality. So while Faun celebrates medieval sounds at the big hall and Phantom from Mexico and Evilcult from Brasil Speed to the Escape, Psychlona from the UK open at the Dreiraum with their Desert Rock.
The cymbals are hanging low and so are the three (bass-)guitars. Psychlona focus on their new album „Warped Visions“, with warm and heavy distortion and bottleneck usage. In some way this Stoner Doom with pinches of Blues makes think of Monster Magnet and let the head move with the rhythm. Like this, Psychlona are the perfect starter for the evening.
Meanwhile, Wino has entered the building. The legend worked with and influenced likes of Dave Grohl, Lemmy, Henry Rollins or Conny Ochs. His next solo album promoted by Purple Sage PR is coming later this month via Ripple Music. With his original Doom Metal band The Obsessed, he appeared at Kristonfest with Graveyard and tonight they perform „The Church Within“ from 1994 and a best-of set.
After Motörhead’s „Rock ’n’ Roll“ as intro, one highlight of this masterpiece hunts the other with the voice floating on top. „Streamline“, „Sky Bone“ and „The Touch Of Everything“ are just a few, with Bob Pantella from Dave Wyndorf’s formation on drums.
Towards the end, The Obsessed, go back and forth in their discography, including the title track from „Sacred“ and „Stoned Back To The Bomb Age“ from their latest „Gilded Sorrow“. The show is fantastic, with wonderful solos, faces dedicated to the music and ending again with Motörhead: „Just ‘Cos You Got The Power“.
Both bands will play at Keep It Low, and the next day, Black Rabbit presents the next Doom candy with Mephistofeles at Viper Room. And the Roadtrip To Outta Space continues with Triptonus, The Vintage Caravan, Bongripper, Naxatras, Kadavar, High On Fire and many more.
