Rickerl – Musik is höchstens a Hobby

This movie summer already brought „Rite Here, Rite Now“, „Ivo“ and „Despicable Me 4“ to the cinemas. And at Arena Sommerkino, this year’s edition features „Teaches Of Peaches“, „Stop Making Sense“ and „Trainspotting“ among others. Tuesday, it is particularly crowded. Beats by Kreiml & Samurai, RAF Camora and Euroteuro help queueing for drinks. 

Then the trailers for „Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari“, „Crossing“ and „Substance“ are shown. „Rickerl – Musik is höchstens a Hobby“ itself was played several times at Breitenseer Lichtspiele or Kino am Dach lately. Voodoo Jürgens, civil name David Öllerer, plays the lead. He was co-founder of Die Eternias, recently went on club tour in U4, Cabaret Fledermaus, Schutzhaus Zukunft and others and worked at a cemetery, like his role. 

He loses the job directly in the beginning of the movie. His girlfriend moved to her new friend in Hietzing with his son. His father is a gambler and the only job he can get is at a sex shop. To get his career as musician going, his manager asks for demo records and even would get him a chance at the radio, where he meets his friend in real live Der Nino aus Wien. 

But even though he tries hard, it even gets worse. Still hope dies last, and so the story follows him through Vienna and iconic locations like the Gürtel and MMM. The dialect is important, and his good heart he proves when giving his guitar to a homeless person. 

Even though it is not autobiographical, the character is simply written for Voodoo Jürgens, who gives the character a lot of soul, that can be seen in his eyes. The dialect is important too, so the vibe fits. „Rickerl“ is a portrait of a social environment like „Andrea lässt sich scheiden“. A film to feel home, to sing, cry and laugh.
