Finnish Summer Lake Romance

Ankea Festival 2026

Hiedanranta, Tampere, Finland 20260605-06

After an outstanding experience at Nummirock in Finland, North-Eastern Europe calls again for a brand-new festival of Prog and Alternative music. To start the journey the right way, there are few things to do.

At On The Rocks Helsinki, the Ankea holds an official warm-up show. Traveling straight to Tampere, where the main event happens, Tapola Laukontori offers the traditional Mustamakkara with jam and milk.

Meanwhile in Valkeakoski, the Valkeakosken Markkinat 2026 hosts typical live music by likes of Hasse Haavisto ja Pieni Hetki. The many lakes nearby are fantastic to have some sauna at a cottage and go swimming. With this preparation, the Ankea can finally start.

Adds for other events like Hellsinki Metal Festival, Helsinki Deathfest and Tuska accompany the way to the old factory area in the west of Tampere. The bracelet exchange goes smoothly and there would be a cloakroom at the entrance – sisäänkäynti in Finnish.

Right next to it is a sauna, if one didn’t already have one at this time of the day. Straight ahead, the first bar serves the Ankea Lager, Sour and IPA by CoolHead Brew. To the left, there are burgers, tacos, merchandise and the ‚factory‘ stage. In the middle, there are more delicacies waiting, and behind is the ‚Ankea‘ stage and smoking area.

Friday 5th

This is where Ankea is ‚absolutely launched‘ by Demonic Death Judge. Their natural sound is a lot about Groove and shows Doom is love like the Old Horn Tooth shirt of drummer Lauri Pikka. With Virta, the direction changes to Ambient Jazz – the Finnish name appropriately translates to stream.

They already show the diversity of this Prog / Post Rock / Alternative Metal music festival. ‚Speed Kraut Pioneers‘ Circle from Pori have been around since the 90s and kinda refer to Budgie, hypnotizing themselves and the audience with a mouth harp and more.

For Earthside (US), it is their first time in Finland and they are the first non-finish band. With great visuals and sound, the only pity is, that they don’t have live vocals. God Is An Astronaut from Ireland then bewitch with tracks like „Suicide by Star“, before Slift come up with their new album „Fantasia“.

Not only their record artworks are appealing (and advertised by Shake Promotion and Subterranean Prints), but so is their live appearance. The biggest names of this day are Ihsahn (Emperor), who features Einar Solberg on stage as big special on „Celestial Violence“.

The musical darkness in Finnish summer bright goes on with Kælan Mikla and Einar Solberg’s main band Leprous as headliner, who toured with likes of Wheel. To close day one, This Will Destroy You is a perfect fit.

Saturday 6th

Gates open even an hour earlier on day two for Royal Sorrow, Rioghan and Bruce Soord. Another highlight is Ihlo with a very likable show, delivering songs like from their latest „Legacy“. Vermilia brings Pagan Metal on stage and leads to the merchandise table right across with „Karsikko Autumn Skull“ shirts and Ankea longs leaves.

Rain comes and goes during the heavy sound of Green Carnation and Progressive Metal by A.A. Williams. The right rhythms for the early evening come from Textures and their new album „Genotype“. As the pit is going as the moshing, the final three artists are approaching.

From Norway, Sylvaine takes the beautiful atmosphere of Ankea further. Tonights headliner is Katatonia, who toured with likes of Sólstafir before and deliver a special „The Great Cold Distance“ 20th anniversary show. Then Oranssi Pazuzu bring it to a great intense end, and soon they will tour Europe again with Múr

With no doubt, this first edition of Ankea is a full success. Hundreds of happy music fans, the perfectly smooth organization and enough tickets sold let them announce the continuation for 2027. With names like Igorrr, Alcest or Der Weg einer Freiheit, it for sure will be a blast again. Like GRIMM put it: Ankea Festival aims to be different.

Until then, the Tampere festival adventure moves to Pub Lietsunkulma just a few minutes by walking. And Finnish humor will be taken by heart watching „Vain Kuolemaa“, „Kummeli“ and reading „Fingerpori“.
