20 Jahre Phal:Angst at Venster99 Wien, Austria 20260529
Newspapers and magazines are on fire this Friday: from musicals like „The Phantom of the Opera“ to Garage and Punk bands like Salamirecorder, Here For A Reason or Discorrected, there is a lot to see. And at Venster99, Muh and the Gang presents a very special anniversary, with three support acts.
So the first performance is by Mika Bankomat. Squeaking noises and thundering rhythms, created with something looking like a bladder fiddle and more, looping to a high wall with no escape. Distorted vocals come on top, as the whole set is like one track, with returning parts and severe tension, what will happen next – a perfectly fitting start.
What actually happens next is Neon Squid Autopsy. Based on beats, the Massive Attack / „Blade“ soundtrack-like tracks clash against the walls. ‚Die Bassrutschn muss meh rutschn‘, the DJ demands. He incorporates quotes like from „Zardoz“ and jokes, that tonight is about 25 years NSA – ending with a remix and announcing the following artist:
Number three is Pete Prison IV, also known as Vereter or working with likes of Alex Kranabetter. Tonight, he presents his vision of Dark Folk solo. Quietly looping to shredding loudly, the audience listens stunned. And he likes to do competitions, asking which band he was in with Pipo, vocalist of the headliner, revealing the right answer is The Lonesome Nobodys.
The headliner, celebrating 20 years of existence (like the Venster99 on 11th July) is Phal:Angst. On bass is Rebecca (Rolltreppe), since Julia Bassenger left already before the Black Rabbit show. With the big screen with visuals at their back, they need little and dark light to create their Industrial Post Rock.
Ants, human masses, commercials, jellyfish and slugs are on while the atmosphere is bitter cold and warm, almost forgiving at the same time. Maybe because Phal:Angst remember their first concert at rhiz, where they will return soon to present the next album coming via Noise Appeal Records, before they end with a cover of Björk’s „jóga“.
