Stoked On Planet Summer (Album 2021)
Juleah
Neo-Psychedelia
As the days are longer and the sun is inviting to sit outside, the time is right for music, which makes think of waves at the sea like the famous Pulp Fiction Theme or the Beach Boys.
The soundtrack for this time comes from Juleah, who recently contributed to the Sarma Records “Sampler-In-A-Day” and collaborated with Francois Sky. For Julia Hummer it is the fourth full length already. With her music, she came around Europe quite a bit, visiting Spain, France and Czech Republic together with Alexander Walser and David Stecher of Finn Parker.
Opener of the album is “Eat Sleep Sun”, presenting the signature sound that spills the sunbeams on the ocean. The voice reminds of 60s Psychedelic like Jefferson Airplane. On drums, we hear Christoph Gallaun of gab&gal, with whom Juleah performed at the Spielboden. To complete the picture, she released a music video with it shot on Super 8.
Several guitar layers of split chords and the soft floating voice bring up other references like The Makings, La Luz or Blind Melon (“Why”) and more of the inspirational decade like The Doors and Sam Gopal like in “Sun Worship”, that atmospherically and instrumentally nails the song’s title.
In “El Paisaje Se Mueve”, the rhythm section with the bass and drums by Felix Burtscher (special guest at Szene Openair) is carrying. The visuals come from Maria Romanza (as for “Snake” as well), musical influence from Allah Las and images from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. One more highlight is the following “Planet Summer”, an exhilarated tune dancing light-footed like “Mr. Bojangles”.
All of the songs breath the spirit of the past, transferring it to the present time and being set for the future. Surf Rock bringing the warm South to rougher places all around. A spirit, the DeeCRACKS expand on their new record too. And in case of Juleah greatly mixed and mastered by Jason Shaw.
